We all could use somebody like Dave In our Neighborhoods.
Doing good in the background by Sarah Einselen, Pharos-Tribune
LOGANSPORT — What’s an extra six acres of mowing? Just one way of many that Dave Mayhill helps out his neighbors.
Mayhill, manager of the Kent Feeds plant on Logansport’s southeast side, was nominated for the 2012 Good Neighbor award by his wife, Joyce Mayhill, after she’d been talking with a coworker about “all of the good things my husband does for people.”
Joyce, executive director of United Way of Cass County, called Dave her “No. 1 volunteer here at United Way.”
“My Dave is the kind of guy that does not want attention for his good deeds,” Joyce admitted. “He is the kind of guy that would prefer being on the back row, staying low key and observing everyone else.”
But Dave’s actions in the background are emblematic of the character of a Good Neighbor, she said.
When a young family moved next door last year and had their third child soon after move-in day, Dave mowed their six-acre lawn in addition to the Mayhills’ own lawn of the same size. He’s also loaned equipment and helped the family trim their trees.
And with the heavy farm equipment he has on hand, he clears the driveways of many neighbors if they are unable to do so themselves.
“He’s just a humble man and just cares about other people,” said Joyce.
