Saving 'our pool' by Scott L. Miley, The Herald Bulletin
ANDERSON, Ind. — Acquaintances Carol Blakeley and John Anderson are reminded every day of their youthful days swimming at the Athletic Park Pool on the east end of the Eighth Street Bridge.
Both still live near the pool.
Both have also heard of local residents’ wishes that the pool, closed after its 2007 season, could be open again.
They’ve been in contact with Anderson Mayor Kevin Smith, who said he expects the pool to be in operation for the 2013 summer season, although the pool has been damaged by neglect and vandals.
To help reopen the pool, Blakeley and Anderson are organizing a “Help Save the Athletic Pool” event on Saturday. The effort begins with an 11 a.m. motorcycle run followed at 2 p.m. by a family-friendly afternoon with live music and food vendors.
“Most of us grew up down there and have been talking about wishing the pool was up and running. People kept saying ‘our pool, our pool.’ I said OK, if it’s our pool then why aren’t we doing something,” Blakeley said. “A lot of work needs to be done to that pool.”
Anderson added, “We need to find a way to get the pool working so kids can enjoy this and even adults can come back and swim. We have a historic place in town. ... People care about their history and the pool is something everybody shares a part of their history with.”
