Leaf peeper's dream, The Herald Bulletin

If you’ve ever traveled to a state park in hopes of catching the most vivid foliage of the fall season, there’s a name for you: “leaf peeper.”

“I have no idea where it comes from, but it’s kind of a cute name,” Jamie Newton said.

Newton is communications director for the Brown County Convention and Visitors Bureau. She’s accustomed to seeing leaf peepers gazing down from hillsides from overlooks.

“Brown County State Park is huge for fall foliage, we’re always packed, and the campground and lodges are almost always sold out,” Newton said.

Saving 'Our Pool'

Saving 'our pool' by Scott L. Miley, The Herald Bulletin

ANDERSON, Ind. — Acquaintances Carol Blakeley and John Anderson are reminded every day of their youthful days swimming at the Athletic Park Pool on the east end of the Eighth Street Bridge.

Both still live near the pool.

Both have also heard of local residents’ wishes that the pool, closed after its 2007 season, could be open again.

They’ve been in contact with Anderson Mayor Kevin Smith, who said he expects the pool to be in operation for the 2013 summer season, although the pool has been damaged by neglect and vandals.

To help reopen the pool, Blakeley and Anderson are organizing a “Help Save the Athletic Pool” event on Saturday. The effort begins with an 11 a.m. motorcycle run followed at 2 p.m. by a family-friendly afternoon with live music and food vendors.

“Most of us grew up down there and have been talking about wishing the pool was up and running. People kept saying ‘our pool, our pool.’ I said OK, if it’s our pool then why aren’t we doing something,” Blakeley said. “A lot of work needs to be done to that pool.”

Anderson added, “We need to find a way to get the pool working so kids can enjoy this and even adults can come back and swim. We have a historic place in town. ... People care about their history and the pool is something everybody shares a part of their history with.”

Man arrested after evading police again by Sam Brattain The Herald Bulletin

ANDERSON, Ind. — An Anderson man who allegedly tried to run over an Anderson police officer Wednesday night was arrested Friday after leading police on a high-speed chase through five counties.

According to police, the chase began in Anderson about 11:30 a.m. and reached speeds of 120 mph.

Police spokesman Detective Joel Sandefur confirmed the man’s identity as Dustin Mullins, 28, who evaded arrest Wednesday night in a stolen 2002 Chevy Tahoe and allegedly attempted to run over Anderson police officer Warren Warren.

The vehicle was discovered later that night, abandoned in the 2700 block of Arrow Avenue. Police believe Mullins fled south on foot along nearby railroad tracks.

Police set up a perimeter in the area but were unable to make an arrest.
On Friday morning, Sandefur said, police received a tip from Crime Watchers that Mullins was near Community Hospital driving a 1999 Chevy Cavalier, which was also stolen.

Sandefur said that once Mullins realized police were after him, he got into the car and fled. Police gave chase, but due to Mullins’ high rate of speed and the potential threat to other people, police suspended the chase.
